Out of all the new toys at shot, I must say im a bit intrigued with the Ruger LC9. This of course a 9mm version of the wildly successful LCR. They supposedly started shipping the first of this month.

I previously wanted to get a Smith Boduguard revolver for a pocket pistol, but this new Ruger may have me reconsider that. Id like to handle one before I'm completely sold on it.

Mayor Richard Daley refused to say today whether an 80-year-old Army veteran who shot and killed an intruder will be charged under the city's handgun ban.

Asked about the possibility of charges, the mayor ended a news conference he had called about summer curfew in the city.

"I don't know. Thank you very much," Daley said and stepped away from the microphone.

Before walking away, Daley acknowledged people's frustration over the issue of gun control but insisted "I don't think the answer is guns."

The homeowner was asleep with his 83-year-old wife and 12-year-old great-grandson when Anthony Nelson -- a parolee with a record of drug and gun arrests -- tried breaking into their East Garfield Park home, police say.

Nelson died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office, which said Nelson died in a homicide--the death of a person at the hands of another person.

The homeowner told investigators that Nelson fired twice before he fired back. The homeowner had bought the gun after being robbed in his home last fall, according to relatives. Police questioned the man for several hours and released him without filing charges, though officials say the investigation is continuing.

The Cook County state's attorney's office has said it has not been contacted regarding pressing charges against the homeowner, but police would be able to charge the homeowner with a misdemeanor crime--such as a violation of city ordinance--without approval from the state's attorney's office.

The man has been hailed as a hero by his family and neighbors, but Daley cautioned that "guns is not the answer to the problems that we see in a home, in the streets of America. It's as simple as that.

"I think everybody understands the frustration that people have in regards to guns, and that's an instance, and I think we understand that," Daley said. "But again, the access to guns in America, the access today is higher today than at any period of time in America."

Police today would say nothing more than that two guns were found at the scene of the home invasion, and that the homeowner has not been charged, but that the investigation is continuing.

1. Does a gas piston AR run cooler than a direct-impingement AR?

First, it depends on what gas piston we are talking about. There are currently a lot of different designs out there and they are not all equal. Some of them are worse than the DI systems they are trying to replace.

Second, it depends on what part of the AR you measure. The bolt can be cooler on a piston AR (and the handguards/gas block will be hotter); but I haven't yet seen any evidence that it makes a difference. Some have claimed that running the bolt cooler improves bolt life and cam pin life; but it seems to me that more modern manufacturing techniques, proprietary bolt designs, and different loading has more to do with differences in bolt life than the temperature. As evidence of this, DI AR15s like the Knights SR15 that use a proprietary improved bolt and barrel extension seem to last longer as well.

2. Does a gas piston AR have a cleaner upper receiver than a DI AR?

Absolutely. The less clear question is "Does it make any functional difference?". I believe Pat Rogers just had a Bravo Company Midlength (DI AR) go 28,905 rounds in training classes with no cleaning at all. It did require some parts replacement as parts wore out; but all they did other than that is add more lube periodically.

Just purchased a new FNP-9. This weapon is a sleeper gun no doubt. It reminds me very much of a Sig. The USG model which I have features a de-cocker/manual safety. This weapon can also be carried cocked and locked.

I found the weapon to be vary light recoiling, very accurate, and so far its reliable. That being said I haven't put a ton of rounds through it. The weapon also features interchangeable back straps, a half cocked hammer safety, and a firing pin block.

The weapon only cost me $459 out the door. The fact that it comes with 3 mags makes it an even better value. There is a new model called the FNX coming out. This may explain the low price. So far its a keeper.

New G17RTF2

I just purchased a new RTF Glock 17. So far I like the pistol very much. Other than the new slide serrations and stippling... It's a Glock.

Contrary to what some people say, the new grip surface didn't tear my skin under recoil. This may be an issue with the hotter 40 caliber rounder, but with the 9mm I had no issues, even when running +p defensive ammo.

I carried this gun concealed in an IWB holster all day long. It didn't rip up my love handles at all, another complaint I've heard people talk about. Now as far as ripping up shirts, I'd have to wear the same shirt daily to see if the new stippling affects the fabric. Time will tell I suppose.

In closing, I'm very pleased with the increased traction of the RTF2 model 17. I'll probably add the new 4th generation 17 to my collection at some point. That, or hold out for the 4th gen Glock 19.

I put 50 rounds through the gun today, and my very first shot was a bulls eye at 21 ft. Guess it's pretty accurate when the fat guy behind the trigger does his part. :)

The Associated Press reported recently that the U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to permit riders on the Amtrak passenger railroad to transport handguns in their checked baggage.

The report says the proposal was approved by a 68-to-30 vote, and would give Amtrak riders rights comparable to those enjoyed by airline passengers, who are permitted to transport firearms provided that they declare they are doing so and that the arms are unloaded and in a securely locked container.

This is great news indeed.

In a story appearing on ESPN.com it's been reported that Burress,in an attempt to plea bargain, has agreed to a year in jail. But the prosecutor wants two. Regardless of the outcome of the bargaining, Burress is going to prison for carrying a concealed weapon in New York City without a permit.

"The HST was designed with expansion in mind and to avoid the "plugging up" issues of the past Hydra-Shoks but it didn't stop there. The bullet has a large hollow point cavity and yet functioned flawlessly in my XD-9 service. Federal's design team efforts have produced one of the finest forms of bullet design technology to date. It is marketed to Law-Enforcement and is rapidly becoming popular amongst LE agencies nationwide. It wouldn’t surprise me if Federal announces a "Civilian Version" of this very successful round sometime in the near future. In my testing the HST showed consistent expansion with great penetration every time. What's hard to see in the pictures is just how sharp the edges of the lead core surface and jacket petals really are. I personally like this round and would use it for home protection, self defense and as a general carry round.
Note: I can't wait to test out the +P loading of this great round."

Smith & Wesson M&P

It's been about a year or so since I picked up my M&P 9mm. So far the pistol hasn't given me any problems at all. I'm one of those rare people who don't log round counts on their guns, so I can only speculate as to how many rounds have been through the pistol. Whatever this magic number is, the pistol hasn't given me an ounce of trouble since it was purchased. I haven't had any jams, failures to feed, or failures to extract. I have ran everything from Winchester white box 100 round boxes, to old live rounds of JHP that were swept up on the range floor. All rounds fired and cycled perfectly.

There were some known teething issues with the early pistols. A visit to the M&P forum will reveal tales of broken strikers and magazines dropping from the pistols when fired. Smith has quickly addressed these issues, and seems to have stepped on these bugs that developed early on. There were some frames made that were just so out of spec, that it caused the magazines to continually fall out despite numerous mag catch updates. My pistol (serial MPH) has yet to develop any type of mag drop. The problem seemed to mainly be limited to the compact .40 calibers.

With that out of the way, I'll tell you what I really like about the pistol. First, the pistol has been utterly reliable through all types of ammo as mentioned above. Secondly, I really like the way the grip feels on the pistol. Its extremely comfortable and feels pretty much like it was custom molded for my hand. With three interchangeable back straps, the gun easily adapts to a multitude of hand sizes. The slide stop and mag release are perfectly within reach. They can be easily accessed without changing your shooting grip. The overall ergonomics of the pistol are first rate.

Trigger: Many people complain of a gritty trigger, which eventually smooths out as the number of rounds fired increases. I guess I was lucky in that got a pretty decent trigger right out of the box.

Recoil: The recoil is another topic many people seem to rave about. I'd have to agree that the M&P is one of the softest recoiling pistols I have shot to date. This is more than likely due to the internal metal chassis within the M&P's frame.

Accuracy: The pistol does not disappoint in the accuracy department. It's no Sig, but it's more than adequate for a combat pistol. I have no qualms with the pistols accuracy at all. As usual, the gun is probably way more accurate than you are.

Overall, I find the M&P to be an excellent combat weapon. Dare I say a revised and improved Glock if you will. I've seen one go for around 6,000 rounds without any cleaning(thanks Todd!). I admit, I'd be interested in further, more elaborate torture tests just for kicks. Not that normal people drop their guns out of planes, freeze them in a block of ice, or drive over them with hummers for no reason at all. It would be amusing none the less.

With the current $50 rebate and free magazine offer, the M&P is a tremendous value as well. You owe it to yourself to rent an M&P and see for yourself why this pistol may be the one to knock Glock off it's high horse.

Buying A Glock 19

I've decided I need(want) to purchase another Glock 19. I unfortunately had to sell mine a while back to due to some financial woes. While I'm not a huge Glock fan, there are just certain features that cant be denied.

The Glock trigger sucks, the grip angle sucks, and the factory sights are made of spare Lego parts. That being said, the Glock 19 is extremely reliable, is very easy to conceal, and offers a lot of fire power in a convenient package. The Glock 19 is combat accurate(4" groups @ 25 yd.), and comes with a very rugged phosphate finish. The metal itself is also treated with Tenifer, which is a hardening agent, and increases the weapons rust resistance. You'd be hard pressed to find a rusty Glock unless it's been completely neglected, and/or purposely abused.

Getting used to manipulating the Glock trigger can take a bit of work for some. I find that I'm "combat accurate" with a Glock, but being "surgical" takes much more practice. Since this is a combat/self defense weapon, I'm more than satisfied with my accuracy in shooting this weapon. Even if you're not a Glock fan, its hard to argue with the popularity of the Glock 19 in particular.

Wepon Mounted Lights.

I highly recommend the Streamlight TLR-1 gun mounted light. This light is about 80 lumens, and is extremely durable. It's made out of a high grade aluminum, is shock resistant, and is also water resistant. It runs off of two 123A lithium batteries (which have a ten year shelf life).

Installing the batteries takes a bit of work as the rear panel is quite tight. This helps create a tight seal with the o-ring, which gives the light its water resistant capabilities. The light gives off a nice clean, white light. Its an LED lighting system so you don't have to worry about shock or worry about the bulb burning out.

I believe in identifying who or what your pointing your weapon at. There are many different philosophies on this subject, by this is my stance. As an armed citizen, you really don't want to go through your home clearing rooms if you don't have to. Leave that to the police. However if there is a break in, and you need to secure family members in a different room, identifying your target is paramount. This is a great light for such situations. These lights can be had with a laser as well. The model that features the laser is called the TLR-2.

If you hunt around, you can find the TLR-1 for about $90-$100. The TLR-2 model can be found for about $189-$199.

Gun Control Lies.

1. Thousands of children die annually in gun accidents.

False. Gun accidents involving children are actually at record lows, although you wouldn't know it from listening to the mainstream media. In 1997, the last year for which data are available, only 142 children under 15 years of age died in gun accidents, and the total number of gun-related deaths for this age group was 642. More children die each year in accidents involving bikes, space heaters or drownings. The often repeated claim that 12 children per day die from gun violence includes "children" up to 20 years of age, the great majority of whom are young adult males who die in gang-related violence.

2. Gun shows are responsible for a large number of firearms falling into the hands of criminals.

False. Contrary to President Clinton's claims, there is no "gun show loophole." All commercial arms dealers at gun shows must run background checks, and the only people exempt from them are the small number of non-commercial sellers. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, at most 2 percent of guns used by criminals are purchased at gun shows, and most of those were purchased legally by people who passed background checks.

3. The tragedy at Columbine High School a year ago illustrates the deficiencies of current gun control laws.

False. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold violated close to 20 firearms laws in amassing their cache of weapons (not to mention the law against murder), so it seems rather dubious to argue that additional laws might have prevented this tragedy. The two shotguns and rifle used by Harris and Klebold were purchased by a girlfriend who would have passed a background check, and the TEC-9 handgun used by them was already illegal.

4. States that allow registered citizens to carry concealed weapons have lower crime rates than those that don't.

True. The 31 states that have "shall issue" laws allowing private citizens to carry concealed weapons have, on average, a 24 percent lower violent crime rate, a 19 percent lower murder rate and a 39 percent lower robbery rate than states that forbid concealed weapons. In fact, the nine states with the lowest violent crime rates are all right-to-carry states. Remarkably, guns are used for self-defense more than 2 million times a year, three to five times the estimated number of violent crimes committed with guns.

5. Waiting periods lower crime rates.

False. Numerous studies have been conducted on the effects of waiting periods, both before and after the federal Brady bill was passed in 1993. Those studies consistently show that there is no correlation between waiting periods and murder or robbery rates. Florida State University professor Gary Kleck analyzed data from every U.S. city with a population over 100,000 and found that waiting periods had no statistically significant effect. Even University of Maryland anti-gun researcher David McDowell found that "waiting periods have no influence on either gun homicides or gun suicides."

6. Lower murder rates in foreign countries prove that gun control works.

False. This is one of the favorite arguments of gun control proponents, and yet the facts show that there is simply no correlation between gun control laws and murder or suicide rates across a wide spectrum of nations and cultures. In Israel and Switzerland, for example, a license to possess guns is available on demand to every law-abiding adult, and guns are easily obtainable in both nations. Both countries also allow widespread carrying of concealed firearms, and yet, admits Dr. Arthur Kellerman, one of the foremost medical advocates of gun control, Switzerland and Israel "have rates of homicide that are low despite rates of home firearm ownership that are at least as high as those in the United States." A comparison of crime rates within Europe reveals no correlation between access to guns and crime.

Gunman Kills Eight at Omaha Shopping Mall.

Lets hear it for "gun free zones". Well, apparently not everyone pays attention to the little "no guns" stickers on the door at shopping malls. I thought that little sticker was supposed to stop atrocities such as this, who knew?

How many people have to be killed before people see that gun free zones are actually killing zones. By posting these signs, you effectively disarm all the citizens who are legally able to carry a concealed hand gun. A meth addict intent on robbing the local 7/11 could care less about the gun sticker on the front door. The law abiding concealed weapons permit holder however is going to obey the sign. They will either opt to leave their weapon in their vehicle, or decide to take their business elsewhere. Those concealed carry permit holders who chose to shop at the Omaha mall were forced to enter the mall unarmed. The mall security also was not permitted to carry weapons. So in effect, every patron in the Omaha mall was forced by the property owners to be sitting ducks. The criminal, Robert A. Hawkins, age 19 or 20, who left a suicide note stating, "I'm going out in style" and "I'm going to be famous," must have missed the "no guns" sticker on the door.

A few musts for your SHTF AR.

I notice a lot of people are buying AR's. Many buying them in lieu of the assault weapons ban that's sure to come if a democrat gets elected. Some are varmint or hunting rifles, and some are being used as range, competition, or defensive rifles. There are a few upgrades and tune ups that need to be made to keep them reliable and in the fight. I Highly recommend the following upgrades for your AR15:

1. Make sure the gas key on the bolt carrier is properly staked.
2. Make sure the castle nut is properly staked.
3. Upgrade to a higher quality bolt, Preferably one that is magnetic particle tested, and shot peened.
4. Make sure the bolt includes a heavy duty extractor with o-ring, and black insert.

Many of the off the shelf rifles don't come with these upgrades as standard. Your Colts, LMTs, and Noveske rifles tend to offer these enhancements as standard protocol. Your Bushmasters, DPMS etc.. not so much. Making these upgrades will go a long way in ensuring the reliability of your rifle should you decide to take a carbine class, or you need the rifle to save your hide one day. If your rifle is simply a plinker, and you don't plan to use it as a defensive tool, then these upgrades can be made over time as the parts wear or break.

Just wanted to report on a inexpensive light that I've been using for well over a year. You can pick it up at WAL*MART for about 20 bucks. This light is durable, water resistant, and is about 10% brighter than the TLR-1/2 tac lights many of us have, and runs off the same 123A lithium batteries. Of course the bulb is a xenon as opposed to LED, so theres a trade off in low maintenance verses brightness. I recommend picking one up to toss in the car, or to strategically place them through out your home. Brinkman.

The Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR), designed by FN Herstal (FNH), is within a modular assault rifle family. The Rifle was designed and manufactured responding to a United States special Operations Command requirement. What is it about fanatic Glock owners? Don't get me wrong, Glocks are fantastic handguns. In fact, I'm in the market for a G19 as I write this. I do however shoot my M&P and Sigs much better than I do Glocks. However, I still find them fun, if a bit awkward to shoot.

Their owners on the other hand, are some of the most insecure, arrogant, and obnoxious people in the firearms community. They some how feel that the Glock is the pinnacle of what a handgun should be. I think they really believe the marketing slogan of "perfection". You cant tell a Glock owner that his pistol isn't the greatest feat of man kind. In their need to feel secure about their purchase, they constantly put down any other polymer framed gun that gains a following. For example, the Springfield XD and the Smith & Wesson M&P will send some Glock owners into a fit with the mere mention of them. News flash you weirdos.. THERE ARE OTHER GUNS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET THAT WILL EASILY PERFORM AS WELL OR BETTER THAN A GLOCK!

Also, what's this obsession Glock owners have with firing the guns under water? What does this prove? Name one self defense scenario where you'd need to empty a magazine while the gun is completely submerged. Glocks aren't perfect by a long shot. No man made mechanical device is. Ive seen Glocks fail just like any other pistol can fail. This is why its key to practice malfunction drills with any weapon you plan to use for self defense.

Obama Calls for Permanent Assault Weapons Ban to Combat Inner-City Violence.

He said the government needs to permanently reinstate an assault weapons ban and close regulatory loopholes that protect unscrupulous gun dealers.
"We have an entire generation of young men in our society who have become products of violence, and we are going to have to break the cycle," Obama said. "There are too many young men out there who have gone down the wrong path."
He later added, "There's a reason they go out and shoot each other, because they don't love themselves. And the reason they don't love themselves is because we are not loving them enough."

Ummm, no. Only a extremely small percentage of crimes are even committed with so called assault weapons. Most are committed with cheap hand guns. Banning assault weapons will not solve the problem of inner city crime. It didn't work when they tried it in 1994, and it wont work now. Gun bans only affect law abiding citizens, not criminals. Blaming guns for inner city violence is like blaming spoons and forks for making people fat.

People like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who are anti gun, do African Americans a disservice with their anti gun rhetoric. Not even realizing the original racist roots of gun control. These two are an embarrassment, constantly playing the race card, and not addressing the real underlying issues with America. Some one needs to send them a post-it note informing them we no longer live in the 50's.

Jackson recently protested outside of a gun shop and was eventually arrested. All a mere publicity stunt in my opinion. The gun shop he was protesting had no infractions of illegal activity at all. When invited in by the shop owner to observe the gun buying process, he declined. Again Jesse, guns aren't the problem, the criminals are the problem. Why attack a law abiding gun shop owner? here's a news flash Jesse, CRIMINALS DON'T BUY FROM GUN STORES, they purchase guns illegally off the streets, not in legitimate gun shops.

Gun Bans Dont Work.

The gun laws in this country leave something to be desired. What people don't understand is that gun laws don't affect criminals, they only affect the law abiding citizens. The criminals don't obey laws remember, hence they are criminals.

For example, in D.C. it was previously illegal to own a gun there. Even in your home for self defense. I say previously as this law was overturned recently and declared unconstitutional. Under this law, citizens in D.C. have been rendered completely defenseless, while criminals roam the streets armed to the tooth. Seem logical? I didn't think so.

You see, the law abiding citizens follow the law, so they don't keep or own any firearms in the D.C. area. The criminals on the other hand could care less about laws(hence again..they're criminals). So what this lovely city has now created is a population of defenseless citizens, and a population of armed criminals on the war path. The criminals in D.C. know that guns are banned for use by the citizens. Knowing this, this emboldens them since they know they can do whatever they want because the citizens cant fight back. A criminal could kick your door in at three in the morning with a shotgun, and theres very little you could actually do about it. The criminals have the advantage in D.C.

Some may say call the cops. Well, you hope you can get through to 911, then you hope your city has a great response time. The best response time is at least five minutes. Lay in your bed looking at the clock for an entire five minutes, imagining a armed intruder is in your house the whole time. You'll notice this five minute response time doesn't seem so fast anymore. What people need to understand is that the police cant be everywhere all the time. They're human. So unless you have a cop standing next to you 24 hours a day(and most people don't), you need to take responsibility for your own safety. Even police officers will tell you this. At best, the police are simply the clean up crew. Often violent crime occurs much too quickly for officers to respond fast enough, if at all. This isn't a knock on police officers, its just plain fact.

Imagine the above scenario. As a man(or woman) you don't even have the right to defend your home and your family from such invasions. The best you could do is barricade yourself and loved ones in your bedroom, dial 911, and hope the police arrive before the bad guy makes it to you in your bed room. Not very comforting is it? Yet this is what the citizens of D.C. are faced with.

Every place that has banned guns, has experienced a surge in crimes committed with guns. For example Australia recently banned all guns. After the ban, crimes committed with guns rose to over 40%! How is this possible you ask? Again, criminals don't obey laws. While the honest, law-abiding citizens handed over their guns to the government...guess who didn't turn their guns in? Yup, the street criminals. So now with the population freshly disarmed and defenseless, it has since been a field day for armed criminals. Knowing they could run a muck committing crime uncontested. They randomly break into houses and shops, knowing they wont be shot by the home owners or shop owners. They're having a field day. Criminals have admitted the number one thing they fear is not the police, but you, the armed citizen. Now, with the citizens freshly disarmed and ready for slaughter, the hunt is on.

Because of the changes made to the gun control laws in 1997, gun owners in Australia were forced to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed, a program costing the government more than $500 million dollars. And now the results are in. After 12 months of banning firearms:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent;
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent).
Hot Burglaries are up 300% (where the intruders come in while you are home and knows that you are home).
In the state of Victoria, homicides with firearms are up 300 percent.

Figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms (but increased drastically in the past 12 months). There has been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly. Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain how no improvement in "safety" has been served after such monumental effort and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns." Their response has been to "wait longer".
